The witness was outside of work smoking when the object's color first came into view.

"It was very, very white; vibrant I would say," the witness stated. "Even when passing under the clouds it continued to have the shinny effect."

The slow moving object did not appear to have wings.

"I saw a distinguished shape. It had no wings at all; no markings and ...

  • Nothing mysterious about Oregon metal boxes

By Ted Bonnitt on February 20th, 2012

The "strange metal boxes" story out of Oregon, won't go away.

The sole source for this highly questionable story, Dave Masko, continues to post increasingly incoherent reports about mysterious metal boxes that have washed ashore in a remote area of the Oregon coast, an area with a history of UFO sightings.

As UFOGRID has reported, Masko is using unattributed sources for his articles, and has offered no compelling evidence to back up his claims.

The only attributed source quoted in Masko's articles that UFOGRID could track down is William Hanshumaker, a Public Marine Education Specialist at the Oregon ...

  • Astronaut's golden anniversary of first orbit

By Ted Bonnitt on February 20th, 2012

NASA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's historic first earth orbital flight for the United States.

The Soviet Union had already sent the first man into orbit, and the space race was well underway.

The US-Soviet "Space Race" was a politically motivated, open checkbook program during the cold war.  Ostensibly, it was a race to send humans to the moon, but a darker motivation was the desire to reign supreme in the heavens, at a time when nuclear missile tipped intercontinental missiles were a new concept, and the threat of an all out nuclear war was very ...

  • NASA budget announced amid agency flux

By Ted Bonnitt on February 17th, 2012

NASA announced its proposed 2013 budget this week, amid a tight fiscal environment that is forcing project cut backs.

Adding to the flux is that for the first time in decades, the U.S. space agency does not have a working, manned space rocket. Astronauts must rely on Russia to get to the International Space Station, until a commercial launch industry takes off.

It's a natural transition similar to the development of the federal highway system, which was built with public funds because it was too large of an investment for private enterprise.  As the government builds a superhighway ...

By Ted Bonnitt on February 17th, 2012

A witness in Pass Christian, Mississippi, took a video of a double lighted object hovering over the Gulf of Mexico this week.

The unidentified witness reported that the object hovered about a mile off shore for several minutes before it appeared to slowly descend into the water.  The video was posted on February 12, 2012.

Possible explanations include a sky lantern, though the intensity of the lights and apparent distance makes it a more interesting sighting.

The FL-AL-MS gulf coast has a history of similar over water sightings.

  • Prehistoric B.C. stone circle identified

By Randy Boswell, Postmedia News on February 15th, 2012

Geologists say that nature has its own style of stone circles.

Randy Boswell reports for Postmedia News:

On a remote, windswept ridge high above the treeline in the Coast Mountains of southwestern B.C., the dull hues of a brownish-green plateau suddenly give way to a bright-white, 50-metre-wide circle of stone.

It's the kind of sight that fires the imaginations of archeologists and UFO enthusiasts alike: Did some prehistoric aboriginal culture create a place of worship or a primitive astronomical observatory amid the clouds and jagged peaks of the Chilcotin Range, about 300 kilometres northwest of Vancouver?

    Or — why ...

It has been regarded as one of the most credible UFO encounter reports ever made – and with good reason.  The four Americans who say their helicopter nearly crashed with a high-speed UFO were members-in-good-standing of an Army Reserve flight crew based at Hopkins Airport in Cleveland: the pilot, Capt. Lawrence Coyne; Arrigo “Rick” Jezzi, who was flying the Huey helicopter that night; the crew chief, Sgt. Robert Yanacsek; and crewmen John Healey.
